Today is International Woman’s Day, and that seems as good an opportunity as any to take a quick look at the women who are currently most quoted in the Oxford English Dictionary. It is the OED’s policy to include illustrative quotations for all senses covered in the Dictionary. Anybody can have a look at the thousand most popular sources and from that list we have picked out the ten most popular women and showcased some of the words for which they are quoted in the OED. These women — all of whom were poets and novelists — had an astonishing impact on the English language, and for that, among many other reasons, we celebrate them today.

1943 : 1940′s Tips to hiring Women
This patronizing sexist and retrospectively quite funny article was first published in the 1943 edition of Transportation. It dishes out sympathetic advice for the poor ‘male’ supervisor. Women ‘know your limits!’
The first three below:
1. Give every girl an adequate number of rest periods during the day. You have to unfortunately make allowances for feminine psychology. A girl has more confidence and is more efficient if she can keep her hair tidied, apply fresh lipstick and do her nails.2. Older women who have never spent time outside their home may be cantankerous and fussy. Impress upon them the importance of friendliness and courtesy!
3. Pick young married women. They have more of a sense – usually – of responsibility, than the unmarried type. They are less likely to flirt.

A rare video of the diminutive Namaqua Rain Frog, a species native to South Africa. The clip was recorded by Dean Boshoff “in the sandy dunes along Port Nolloth in the Northern Cape province.”
